Transponder keys versus smart keys
A transponder key has a small chip in the head that communicates with the car when inserted, so the engine will only start if the chip matches. It still has a physical blade that is cut to the lock. A smart key, often a proximity fob, lets you unlock and start the car without inserting anything, using a push-button ignition and a signal the car detects nearby.
The two need different handling. A transponder key generally requires a cut blade plus chip programming, while a smart key is mostly about pairing the fob electronically, sometimes with a mechanical backup blade included. Knowing which system your car uses is the first thing we sort out, usually from the year, make, and model.
Cutting versus programming
Cutting is the mechanical side: shaping a blank so it physically turns the door lock or ignition. Programming is the electronic side: teaching the vehicle to accept the new key's chip or fob signal so it will start and, on many cars, unlock remotely.
Some jobs need only one step. A basic spare for an older car might just be cut. But for most modern vehicles, a replacement is not usable until both steps are done, because the car will refuse to start even with a perfectly cut key that has not been programmed. That is why replacing a lost key is more involved than duplicating a simple house key.
What we need and honest expectations
The year, make, and model of your vehicle is essential, since it determines the blank, the chip type, and the programming method. Proof that the vehicle is yours is a normal and reasonable part of key work, since a new working key is a serious thing to hand over. If you still have one working key, that can sometimes simplify the process.
